This tour is designed to show you the best of Riga and introduce you to the history of Riga’s Jewish community. It includes the Old Town; the Moscow Suburb, which is the former Riga ghetto; the Art Nouveau district and Ķīpsala Island with the Žanis Lipke memorial.
The tour starts with a visit to the most ancient part of Riga – the Old Town. Its rich cultural heritage means it’s a lively compendium of Latvian history. During the Old Town tour we will also visit the Synagogue of Riga.
Just next to the Old Town lies the Moscow Suburb, named for the old trading route to Moscow, which passed through this district. The route will take you through the Riga Central Market to the territory of the former Riga Ghetto, now a quiet inner-city district of Riga. We will make a stop at the Ghetto Museum, which reveals the history of the Latvian Jewish community during the 20th century.
The next destination is the elegant Art Nouveau district. This style shaped our city in the early 20thcentury, creating a whole new approach to architecture and decorating the buildings of Riga with fascinating creatures and mystical symbols.
Our last stop is Kipsala Island, an area historically inhabited by fishermen and port workers, which is now one of the most attractive areas of Riga because of its beautiful wooden houses, peaceful atmosphere and the view of the city from across the river. In Kipsala we will visit the Žanis Lipke Memorial to hear about the man who saved many Jews during WWII and gave them shelter. The museum was nominated for the Council of Europe Museum Prize in 2014.
